TXU Energy Free Nights plans create an incentive for customers to shift their electricity consumption away from hours of peak demand and peak heat to the nighttime when wind-generated electricity is more readily available and market prices are lower. TXU Energy of Texas is trying something very different by giving electricity away for free. It's called TXU Energy Free Nights and the only catch is that you have to consume it during off-peak hours between 10pm and 6am.
The plans are meant to benefit TXU with rising power generation cost and help customers with personal energy costs. What can you do between 10pm and 6am?

TXU Energy Free Nights helps you save on your electricity bill with free Energy Charges from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. You can get 25% of your Energy Charges for free. And, by shifting just 10% of their electricity use from daytime to nighttime, customers on this plan can save even more – more than $200 a year or $400 by the end of their two-year contract term.
TXU Corp. is offering a pricing product that only charges for electricity used during the day. From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., electricity is free for people on the Free Nights pricing plan. Anyone who can shift about a third of the household electricity use to night time could save money. The plan is an early example of a company making use of data generated by digital meters to create a new product.
TXU Energy is hardly the first utility to roll out differentiated pricing plans to residential customers. The utility estimates that if customers can shift about 10 percent of electricity use from doing laundry or running the dishwasher, they can save about $200 per year.
